Esta noche, se lleva a cabo la “Fiesta por la Luz”, convocada por el Movimiento #YoSoy132 en las afueras de Televisa Chapultepec.

Estamos aquí los que queremos hacer de esta fiesta un momento histórico. Hemos demostrado que, conforme crece, yo soy 132 se fortalece en unidad y continúa su causa comprometida por la paz. Ningún acto con violencia representa a nuestro movimiento. Nuestras acciones son, han sido y serán siempre pacíficas: por la democratización de los medios. Sabemos que nuestro voto es la oportunidad para elegir entre la opacidad y la luz.
Nos han puesto una venda durante mucho tiempo. Una venda que nos sumía en la ignorancia, en el desapego, en la falta de interés por el futuro de nuestra democracia. Hoy, estamos aquí reunidos para darle fin a años de oscuridad. Estamos aquí para hacer de éste el inicio de un camino que dé luz a una ciudadanía hambrienta de justicia y de información. Una ciudadanía crítica, no sólo de los políticos y el gobierno, sino también de sus medios de comunicación.
Estamos aquí, personas de todas edades y de todas las clases sociales, hombres, mujeres, estudiantes, músicos, académicos, jóvenes y viejos. Tenemos los ojos abiertos y los oídos dispuestos a escuchar una respuesta a este reclamo de dignidad.
Hoy hemos sido invitados por estudiantes. Estudiantes que se han movilizado para demandar una democracia informada, para criticar a los medios de comunicación, para exigir verdad. Su esfuerzo y capacidad de movilización han sido enormes. Yo soy 132 surgió como una acción estudiantil, más sus demandas interesan a todos los ciudadanos. El movimiento que comenzó en una universidad debe ahora dialogar con la ciudadanía, con aquellos que no somos estudiantes, pero que compartimos las mismas demandas. Yo soy 132 hoy se convierte en un proyecto ciudadano.
Hoy decidimos apagar la televisión y abrir un nuevo libro. Hoy decidimos no ser más receptores de una realidad a medias. Exigimos democracia, transparencia, pero sobre todo, realidad.
Hoy decidimos quitarnos las vendas, y con ellas, las cadenas que nos tenían en atados a la ignorancia. Hoy decidimos encender una luz por la verdad, hoy decidimos, mediante este cuaderno blanco, transmitirla a cada ciudadano. Que cada una de las personas que está aquí se comprometa a usar un cuaderno completo de aquí al primero de julio para distribuir hoja por hoja, mano a mano información para promover un voto contra la mentira. ¿Trajeron veladoras, trajeron linternas? Aquéllos que no usen su celular. Encendamos la verdad.
Si no ardemos juntos, ¿quién iluminará esta oscuridad?

MEXICO CITY, MEXICO.- Last night, the student movement #YoSoy132 summoned its followers and sympathizers to gather outside the building of Televisa Chapultepec in a special event they called “Fiesta por la luz” (Party for the Light).
Editor’s note: In a symbolic gesture, thousands of people held candles and lamps to illuminate the properties of the biggest television network in Latin America. From this location, the movement shared a video with us, accompanied by the following text, in which they explain its meaning and motivation.
We have gathered here tonight because we want to turn this party into a historic moment. We have shown the world how the movement #YoSoy132 keeps growing in strength while being committed to its peaceful goals. Violence is not part of our movement’s ideals. Our actions are, have been and will be forever of a peaceful nature in order to democratize the media. We know that our vote means the opportunity to choose between darkness and light.
They have placed a veil around our eyes for a long time. A veil that dragged us into ignorance, indifference, and the lack of interest for our democracy’s future. This night, we have gathered to put an end to all these years of darkness. We are here to make this the starting point of a road that will bring light to citizens hungry for justice and information. A citizenship that can criticize, not only its politicians and bureaucrats, but its media corporations as well.
The people who have gathered are of all ages and belong to all social classes. Men, women, students, artists, scholars, young and old. Our eyes are open and our ears willing to listen to an answer in this demand for dignity.
We have been invited by students. Students who have organized to demand an informed democracy, to criticize the media, and to call for Truth. Their efforts and commitment to the cause have been outstanding. #YoSoy132 emerged as a student reaction, but its demands remain in the interest of every citizen. The movement that began in a college campus must now establish a dialogue with the citizenship, with those of us who are not students, but who share the same demands. Tonight, #YoSoy132 becomes a citizen project.
Tonight we’ve decided to turn off our television sets and to open a book. Tonight we’ve decided to quit being passive recipients of a reality saturared with half-truths. We require democracy, transparency, but most of all, truth.
Tonight we’ve decided to take off our veils, and with them, the chains that had us imprisoned in ignorance. Tonight we’ve decided to light a candle for truth.
If we don’t burn together, who will illuminate this darkness?
