El 21 de octubre de 2013 el mundo de la música se vio empañado por el suicidio de Steven Paul Smith, mejor conocido como Elliott Simith, uno de los cantautores norteamericanos más brillantes de los últimos tiempos. La noticia no fue una sorpresa: sus letras siempre reflejaron la tristeza y melancolía que cargaba. No podemos negar que la carga emocional y melodía de sus canciones se extrañan.
Muchas de sus letras se han convertido en parte del soundtrack que nos acompaña en días difíciles. Canciones con frases llenas de desesperanza y tristeza, escritas gracias a la inspiración e influencia de las drogas y el alcohol que Elliott comenzó a consumir desde los 14 años.
Desde su primer disco, Roman Candle publicado en 1994 por Cavity Search Records, Smith impactó con su sonido melancólico en el que destacaba la armonía de su guitarra, que llegó a hacerle contrapeso al grunge, género dominante de aquel entonces.
El abuso de las drogas y el alcohol fueron una constante en su carrera, sin embargo también eran el motor que impulsaban el proceso creativo del ‘sad boy’ de Nebraska. Elliott Simith supo narrar de una forma bella el crudo y sombrío mundo en el que se encontraba.
